Pheochromocytoma: Analysis of Possible Risk Factors Affecting Peroperative Hypertensive Crisis

Abstract
This study was carried out to evaluate the incidence of hypertensive cirsis during surgical extirpation of pheochromocytomas and to determine possible risk factor affecting hypertensive crisis on a series of 38 patients with pheochromocytoma
treated
surgically from March 1984 to January 1995. Data concerning 6 possible risk factors, including those with degree of preoperative hypertension, level of 24 hours urinary VMA, level of 24 hours urinary metanephrine, tumor size, location of tumor
and
preoperative preparation duration, were analyzed to predict the peroperative hypertensive crisis.
By this analysis, the incidence of peroperative hypertensive crisis was 57.9%(22/38) and none of those factors except for preoperative preparation duration had any correlation with the peroperative hypertensive crisis. Patients who had more than
3
weeks
preoperative preparation duration showed a significant low incidence of peroperative hypertensive crisis.
This results suggest that more than 3 weeks preoperative preparation duration may contribute to decrease the incidence of peroperative hypertensive crisis
